Father, Son and House of Wendy

WENDYMIX2021

Photoshop wizardry by Al O'Neill

Let’s play along with this meme, left to right: Wendy’s musical taste 2001 (year of the first mix), Wendy’s musical taste 2021, Wendy’s musical taste 2041.

As always, it’s not necessarily the “best” music of the year, just some songs I loved listening to. The selection is “eclectic” (or, in other words, a hot mess). Hope you find something in here you like.

Here it is on Spotify:

All Too Well (10 Minute Version), Taylor Swift

If you weren’t expecting me to put a 10-minute Taylor Swift re-recorded to include more lyrics about Jake Gyllenhaal dumped her, you hardly know me at all.

White Dress, Lana Del Rey

Not the most obvious Lana song to include but she had a good year of two albums and this track stuck with me for whatever reason.

Like I Used To, Sharon Van Etten & Angel Olsen

Two great tastes that go great together.

Shit Show, Peter McPoland

Could be the theme song for these past two years, eh?

Silk Chiffon, MUNA with Phoebe Bridgers

An ode to a gay kiss, in a slightly more subtle approach than Katy Perry.

Cherry Flavored Stomach Ache, HAIM

I met a HAIM this year (Alana) and she was awesome and super chilled. A goddess also on screen (in Licorice Pizza).

Therefore I Am, Billie Eilish

I’m still processing Billie’s Vogue makeover, but no doubt she’s a talent.

Addicted, Jorja Smith

She’s been writing songs since she was 11. I feel old.

Tonight Tonight, Celeste

All that talent AND she has amazing hair.

Hopeful, Curtis Harding

A bit of positivity from Atlanta’s new soul scene.

Find My Way, Paul McCartney featuring Beck

Macca’s still got it!

Down, St. Vincent

Annie Clark’s still got it, too!

Jackie, Yves Tumor

Discovered him in 2020 and still grooving along in 2021.

Radio, Sylvan Esso

A song from 2017 rediscovered in the film Ali & Ava. North Carolina’s own!

Pond House, Saint Etienne

I love that Saint Etienne are still kicking. Summery and cool.

Panic Attack, Pussy Riot

Ripped from the headlines, I realized I’d never actually heard their music.

Oh!, The Linda Lindas

Go on, girl punks (all under 18).

Chaise Longue, Wet Leg

The most Marmite hipster pop song of the year. So hard to get out of your head.

I Need Some of That, Weezer

I have listened to this song 100 times at least. Fun, stupid, ‘90s throwback.

Stars are Blind, Paris Hilton

I, too, am disappointed in myself. A bit of an underrated pop delight, brought back into my head by the film Promising Young Woman.

Oh My God, Adele

Post-divorce Adele that you can almost dance to.

Toast with the Butter, Blu DeTiger

I mean, just so stupid but catchy. And we need more sexy songs about bad carbs.

Rumors, Lizzo featuring Cardi B

We need more new Lizzo but this will do for now.

Best Friend, Saweetie featuring Doja Cat

To all the “real bad bitches” in my life.

Hot Summer, Prince

It’s written in the WendyMix bylaws that any old Prince unearthed from the vaults has to be included
