WendyMix 2023

Sorry, you won’t be able to unsee me as Ken!

It’s time to unveil the WendyMix 2023.

Not sure I listened to particularly cool music this year, and there are more songs from films than usual (occupational hazard)…but hopefully you like some of the tunes.

Get the mix here on Spotify. Here's the track listing with commentary.

Now and Then, The Beatles

Is it my favourite Beatles song? Nope. But is it a f’ing miracle to have a new Beatles song? Yep.

Not Strong Enough, boygenius

Hipster supergroup of the year! I’m down with the kids.

What Was I Made For?, Billie Eilish

From Barbie.

Oppenheimer, Old 97s

To complete the Barbenheimer doubleheader, it’s always good to remind everyone how great the Old 97s were (song from 1999).

The River, Daisy Jones & The Six

This show didn’t get enough love – great chemistry between Riley Keogh and Sam Claflin.

New York Comeback, Lucinda Williams with Bruce Springsteen

Two legends.

Daylight, David Kushner

Have no idea where I first heard this but it stopped me in my tracks. Now he’s a TikTok sensation (but I’ve got no time for TikTok).

True love, Christine and the Queens, feat 070 Shake

Chris can do no wrong.

The Bend, King Princess

Born in 1998. Yup, feeling old.

Nothing Left to Lose, Everything but the Girl

Now feeling age-appropriate again.

Worth It, RAYE

I’m sensing a trend -- I’m so old I’ve never even heard of her til Louis Theroux interviewed her.

The Girl is Crying in Her Latte, Sparks

Honestly I don’t know if I loathe this song or love it, but it’s stuck in my head

It’s Alright Kevin (Manhood 2023), Dexys

How can you not want a bit of new Dexys?

C’est Comme Ca, Paramore with Wet Leg

About the level of my own French linguistics. Sorry, Madame Heinzen.

Turn the Car Around, Gaz Goombes

Return of the Supergrass geezer.

The Narcisssit, Blur

New Blur.

Death of a Party, Blur

While we’re at it, let’s do a Blur double shot – this one is a 1997 track from the club scene in All of us Strangers

Little Things, Jorja Smith

Another amazing young talent – I loved her track Blue Lights a few years ago.

Rice, Young Fathers

Best band working today? Discuss.

Rigor Mortis, The Hives

We needed a little more rock on here.

Vampire, Olivia Rodrigo

Born in 2003.

World Class Sinner/I’m a Freak, Lily Rose Depp

From the despicably bad TV show The Idol that I thankfully had the good sense to abandon after the first two episodes. An earworm, though.

Tell No One About Tonight, Le Sport

Shazam-ed from some film or TV show and then promptly forgot which one.

Shoop, Salt-N-Pepa

Thanks to Rye Lane for reviving this banger!

Cruel Summer, Taylor Swift

It’s been one of my life’s major regrets* that the 2019 WendyMix didn’t include a track from Taylor Swift’s Lover and now I’m righting that wrong with song that resurfaced in 2023. Even I’m at peak Taylor now and would like her to go hide for a year or two.

*joking

Cruel Summer, Bananarama

Hey TayTay, respect your elders -- here’s Bananarama’s Cruel Summer for balance.

Champagne Shit, Janelle Monae

A bit of fun and Janelle is super cool (almost put Float on here as well).

Murder on the Dancefloor, Sophie Ellis Bexter

There was only ever one choice for the closing track. From the jaw dropping final scene of Emerald Fennell’s brilliant Saltburn

If you like that playlist, there’s a second DeepCuts playlist here.
